Switching from chemical to organic farming is one of the best decisions a farmer can make — but doing it the wrong way can hurt yields in year one. Here is a practical, low-risk way to make the change.
Don’t go cold turkey
Soil that has depended on chemicals for years needs time to rebuild its biology. A sudden, complete switch can cause a temporary yield dip. Transition gradually — reduce chemical inputs step by step while increasing organic ones.
Start with a soil test
Know your starting point. A soil test tells you what your land actually needs, so you can target the transition instead of guessing.
Build organic matter first
Add compost, vermicompost and bio-fertilisers to revive microbial life and organic carbon. This is the foundation — without it, nothing else works as well.
Be patient through the first season
Expect the soil to “re-learn” for a season or two. By the second and third year, most farmers see healthier soil, lower input costs and stable or higher yields — with a product they can sell as organic.
MSAF’s complete range — bio-fertilisers, manures, enrichers and conditioners — is built to support every stage of that journey.
